Just read a Smithsonian article on "the forgotten general" and found your site most informative.

Thank goodness for General Thomas. My great, great, great grandfather served in the 2nd Mo and fought there. Perhaps, because of Thomas, my ancestor survived the battle.

I really enjoyed visiting your website and reading the history of Gen. Thomas especially since I recently visited the Cumberland area. I visited Fort Donelson National Battlefield and Cemetery. My Uncle was buried there in 1977 but there are many, many graves from Civil War Days. The Battlefield has been maintained as much intact as it was the 1860's as possible. Thank you.

I was interested in seeing the name Thomas on a Civil War monument in LaGrange, Ohio. The names on the monument were:
Grant, Sherman, Sheridan and Thomas. As my maiden name was Thomas, I decided to do some research. My husband found a book on the Civil War by Robert Paul Jordon (National Geographic staff) and was pleased to see a few pages that mentioned Gen. Thomas.

The best and most innovated. given the shaft by men of lesser talents. His only fault was loyalty to his commanders and hatred of the political army where talent was no competition. He saved his army and could have saved lives if put in charge of all the armies of the union.

Impressive web site. 'Pap' Thomas was indeed the best Union General. I had the opportunity to visit Snodgrass Hill last summer. You can almost feel the emotion and energy there. Every American should make it a point to visit Chickamauga when you happen to be in the area.

This man was easily the best general on both sides during the Civil War. John F. Sullivan.

Though I am an avid follower of the Iron Brigade, I have got to rank George Thomas as the most unsung Union hero of the war. The innovations he brought to warfare remain a tribute to his genius at making war. His refusal to commit until ready at Nashville is a tribute to his concern for his men

Love the site! I've been a George Thomas fan since my 11th grade history teacher, an ex-military man, inspired me with him over 50 years ago. I also lived for a year right near the site of the Battle of Franklin. A fine website for one of America's greatest heroes. Best wishes, Don Large.

Question: Did Gen. Thomas have problems with his Family because he remained loyal to the Union? And did his Sisters I believe disown him?

General Thomas was the only general in the ACW to destroy two enemy armies in consecutive battles, Franklin and Nashville. Despite their differences, Ulysses S. Grant and William T. Sherman admired General Thomas' qualities. Sure he was and is "The Rock Of Chickamauga" but he was more than that. Like General James B. McPherson his full stature in the public memory needs to be understood. I see this site as a fine attempt to do just that. I wish you luck!

I stated recently that General Thomas won the Battle Of Franklin. This was wrong. The commander at that battle was Major-General John S. Schofield. I confused the fact that many soldiers from the Army Of The Cumberland were detailed to serve at Franklin with General Thomas commanding them. He was their "spiritual commander" but the victory belongs to Schofield. In no way does this diminish Thomas in my view since at Nashville he inflicted the biggest defeat on an enemy army on a battlefield than any other general in the ACW.

It is gratifying to learn more about General Thomas... think I have seen his name only a few times...so good to finally meet this great man. Have been reading about his early life in Virginia. We need more men like him in our country today.
