After reading Borbrick's new biography of General Thomas I have found a new Civil War hero. Where could I get a copy of the picture on your website?

With reverential respect for this great man, who symbolizes for me the largely untold story of the tens of thousands of southern born men who, from privates to generals, remained true to the union cause, many dying in its service....55 regiments of southern born soldiers were raised, from every state except South Carolina...over 100,000 served the union cause, many dying, many suffering the hatred of their own families for their fidelity...this is a story that deserves to be better known...and General Thomas is the outstanding examples of this unwavering courage and faithfulness to his nation....both sides fought with their own beliefs and honor, but certainly these loyal southerners deserve a more hallowed place in history....

I've read two biographies of Thomas and consider him to be the hidden hero of the Civil War. I trust his reputation will continue to rise and that knowledge and respect for him will grow in time.

Best union general, did not blow his own horn in spite of being a Leo... Methodical and well organized, which saved lives...God bless his memory.

In my opinion one the the great civil war generals. I believe, contrary to many writings & opinions, Thomas was offered civil war commands and promotions, but refused them. He also refused a promotion of lt. gen. after the war. In the end, he was the only major commander on either side never to lose a battle.

Good and comprehensive site for Gen. Thomas. My great-grandfather commanded a Confederate infantry regiment from Tennessee and was well known for his opposition to secession. He decided he would not fight against his state nor aid invaders to dismantle and ravage it. Gen. Thomas, indeed, remained loyal but betrayed his family and neighbors in doing so. Pity.

grew up in MN, now NJ, but here in VA with Scott C., who's writing "The Battling Blacks of Butler, CO, PA". The Blacks put 14 men at arms in the Civil War, some in the 78th Pennsylvania, who we're following on the web. A number of their battles coincide with Thomas's command. A real hero, and, for me, a fresh lesson; Scott, OTOH is encyclopedic in favorable competition with Warner's "Generals in Blue", from LSU.

Gen. Thomas has always been one of my favorites of the Civil War. His nick-name; "The Rock of Chickamauga" spurred my interest of Gen. Thomas. A great General and a great American!

Next month, I will be flying to Atlanta where my daughter (Air Force Vet) and her fiancé (West Point Grad.) will pick me up and take me to the Chickamauga battlefield. I can't tell you how much I look forward to this. It is heartwarming, yet somewhat ironic, how many now proudly claim kinship to Gen. Thomas. Time heals all wounds....just about. While reading many of the posts on this site, one in particular caught my attention. The poster referred to Thomas' decision to remain loyal to the Union as a "pity" and a "betrayal" to his family and friends, and of course by extension, Virginia. The following should explain, perfectly, the Generals decision. The wording of the Oath may have been somewhat different all those years ago, but the essence of the Oath is undoubtedly the same: "I, George Henry Thomas, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic, that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God." May God bless the memory of General George Henry Thomas.

I attended P.S. #49, the George H Thomas School in Rochester NY in the 1950's. I never knew who he was! This is very interesting information. I'm looking for a photo of the school.
