Great site! Why was he left out of the "main stream" history books?

Thanks for the informative website. I am related to General Thomas and have always been curious to learn more about him, but could not find much biographical material. Although he probably would not have liked it, the research you've done to help educate the world about this misunderstood and underrated hero is commendable.

I am very happy to have found your web site. I have long been an admirer of Gen'l Thomas and recently found Cleaves' biography in Barnes & Noble which further enlightened me about Thomas' integrity besides his military prowess. I hope to get to the new (2007) bio very soon and I thank you for including a bibliography on your web site. It seems that serious students of the Civil War are aware of at least some of General Thomas' accomplishments but I would love to see a greater awareness of General Thomas among the general public so he can rightfully stand beside Grant and Sherman as those most responsible for Union victory in the war.

Great work on a great man. Gen. Thomas is my favorite Civil War Officer. It is a shame he is not mentioned in the same breath as Grant and Sherman (lesser leaders). A man of the south who stood up for what was right (Union). I hope all have the opportunity to stand on the ridge at Chickamauga and to think of the "Rock" and the service he provided a torn nation.

You're right. General Thomas needs to be recognized for his contribution. I had never heard of him until I read one of McPherson's books, and it became obvious that unlike the huge majority of Union generals, this guy did little wrong throughout the war - he just kept winning his battles his way, and always with an eye out for his men. The self-promoters won the glory in the end as far as the history books are concerned, and that's a shame. Thanks for your website.

George Henry Thomas is no mystery to Civil War historians. He is widely recognized as one of the top three Union Generals of Grant, Sherman, & Thomas. What place in this trio depends on your point of view. Thanks and keep setting history straight.

Congratulations on being selected a 2009 Britannica Best Website. You certainly deserve it. I have only recently discovered the vital part General Thomas played in the Civil War and am in the midst of reading everything I can get my hands and eyes on. It rankles me to know end that politics and personal jealousy succeeded in virtually erasing a great man's name from history. Thomas is a man that proves beyond a doubt that history can be contrived and molded to suit the desires of those less honorable. My heartfelt thanks for your gallant efforts to set the record straight. Seems there's enough intrigue here to make a great movie.

I admired the courage and patriotism of his man. As a southerner he stood by the union side. But my great appreciation in this GENERAL is the fact he was the backbone of the "Sherman march to the sea": He secured Sherman's back and sides from Atlanta to Savannah from the Rebel Gen. Hood.

Congratulations at having your hard work on GHT's behalf finally recognized with the 2009 Best Web Site Award. Something along the lines of General Thomas waiting for history to do him justice...... But this has been a great GHT web site, long before 2009!

I just discovered recently that General George Thomas was my great grandfather's first cousin. My mother remembers her parents talking about the "Rock of Chickamauga," but she never understood its great significance. I will be traveling to Washington, D.C. in a few months and am really looking forward to visiting Thomas Circle.
