General Thomas Oath of Office for Brig. General

During the Civil War, signing this almost hysterically written “Oath of Office” was a mandatory requirement. George Thomas was once asked if he felt insulted to have to sign such a document to prove his loyalty. “I don’t care,” was Thomas’ reply, “I would just as soon take the oath before each meal during my life if the department saw proper to order it.”
