My favorite CW general, too greatly underrated and unknown.

You are to be congratulated. I give talks on GHT to various CWRTs and teach a course at a local community college centered on GHT and the Army of the Cumberland. Good Work!

I have recently read a few articles highly complimentary about this general and wanted to find out more about him.

I found in my ancestor's pension file, that after the war he reenlisted in the Calvary and was sent to General Thomas's headquarters in Nashville and was there for a time before being sent on the Indian Campaign. He was a farrier.

One has to look a little harder to find great generals for the Union cause. From what I've read, George Thomas, along with Grant, Sherman and Sheridan appears to fit the description.

I have always admired General Thomas. I first read about him as a child in a book by an author named Althsheler(sp.) entitled "The Rock of Chickamauga" Since then, I've read as much about him as I could and have educated my friends about him to an extent that I'm sure they find a bit eccentric.

Not certain but I think my Great-Grandfather served under General Thomas. Will keep searching and this is a great site to visit. He was from Kentucky...I am currently in New Orleans, but was born in Oklahoma.

I'm a Social Studies teacher/coach at a middle school. I enjoy your website. Since I'm planning a less unit about the Civil War, I would like to ask you for your permission to use your website for my lessons. Thanks for taking your time to read this e-mail and hope to hear from you soon.

I was principally responsible for having a memorial plaque placed at the General's gravesite at Oakwood Cemetery, Troy, N.Y. I became so involved in writing the inscription for the plaque I inadvertently inserted a homonym: I used the word "lead" when I meant "led". No one else caught it either; whiteout just wouldn't work on a bronze plaque. At least when people wander by the gravesite they will know a bit more about Thomas than "...born in Southampton Co. Virginia, born-died, etc."
