You're right. I never heard about Gen Thomas until I got to your website. And your site is well constructed.

Your "What If" questions are very poignant and thought provoking. The trouble is we can "what if" all through history and we should just work to ensure that the truth about one of the giants of the "War of the Rebellion" is known. Excellent website.

I am City Clerk of Fort Thomas, Kentucky, a lovely residential Northern
Kentucky community perched atop the hills overlooking the Ohio River, adjacent to Cincinnati, Ohio. Our City was named for Gen. George H. Thomas and we are very proud to carry on his name and history with various events and open houses at our small Military History Museum in Tower Park. Our only artifact is his dress uniform sash, which is lovingly framed and hanging on the wall. We also have a copy of some documents with his signature, and a few pictures. Our next Open House is Sun., Nov. 18, 2001 (2-5 P.M.) and we will again try to make the children of our community (as well as other visitors) acquainted with the very fascinating story of General Thomas.

Personally, I believe General Thomas is one of the unsung heroes of this terrible war. People like Grant and Sherman get too much credit because people have heard of them.

In all my readings I have been impressed with General Thomas but he hasn't
gotten much recognition...

It is only through another book that I reveled in the history of this fine Union General. I believe Thomas was a Virginian who, contrary to his familial ties and birthplace, chose to remain loyal to the Union. He paid dearly for this choice in terms of his family's disinheritance.

Thanks for the website dedicated to this underappreciated warrior. My Great
Grandfather, James Wesley Woodard Co "K" of the 60th Illinois fought most of his time in the war under the leadership of General Thomas in the Army of the Cumberland and thank goodness, with the exception of the "skirmish" at Buzzard Roost, Ga. in Feb '64, where James was seriously wounded, my forebearer survived the war and the March to the Sea! I believe his survival at least partially the result of General Thomas' superior leadership!

A very inspirational short biography of not only a fine General, but obviously
a thorough gentleman at the same time.

Would to God we had men of this stature leading the nations and military
forces of the West today.

Congratulations on a fine site dedicated to my favorite Union commander. I am a collateral descendent of Confederate Lt. Gen. John Bell Hood, who studied under Thomas at West Point, served with him in the Second U.S. Cavalry Regiment on the Texas frontier, and was soundly defeated by Thomas at Nashville. I own the www.johnbellhood.org website. A story goes that after the war Hood called upon Thomas at Louisville, and respecting Hood's severely crippled physical condition, Thomas came downstairs and met with Hood, rather than have Hood climb the steps to his office. Although this seems a minor gesture, I believe it was indicative of George Thomas exalted personal character.

I join the ranks of the George "Pap" Thomas fan club. The best general in the Union army was a Virginian. I'll bet that is hard to swallow for Grant and Sherman fans.
