Great website. Lots of new info for me on GT.
We have a Family History relating to General George Thomas but I can't follow the line exactly and thought that you might have some Info on the Subject.
Here's what we know....
Hartshorn Thomas b. 1792 d. 1821
Edward Kirkbride Thomas b. 1817 d. 1906
Mary Williams Thomas b. 1847 d. 1917
Does any of this info tie into your own Thomas Family Trees?

My grammar school on the North side of Chicago is named after Gen. Thomas. It was opened in 1898. The school was closed in the 1980's and was converted into condos. The entrance with the school name is still there.

Hello Dave. I check in frequently to your web site; it's still the best on our boy, George! Maybe you would want to add this title to your GHT Bibliography list:

Bowers, John.....Chickamauga and Chattanooga, the Battles that Doomed the Confederacy.....New York.....Harper Collins.....1994.....
Keep this great web site, and thanks again.

Nice site, for a figure almost written out of history because of political correctness (at least he was on a five dollar bill!). Much of my knowledge of him is emotional, as he was my great grandmother's father. (Ida Thomas Richart). It was a massive contradiction being a southern republican was raised in CA. and I never understood the sadness associated with the stories told, until I was quite mature.

As a child I thought he was a confederate soldier like Ida's husband and his brothers in Memphis. Evidently he was always referred to as Captain Thomas, or Big shot, by his daughter, and subsequent family. I never asked why as a child, especially since my grandmother was a little dramatic in that southern style.

I am currently working on the genealogy of General George Thomas from Southampton Co VA. If there is anyone out there with information regarding this, please e-mail me.
I am going back to the earliest known Thomas ancestor, a William Thomas of Surry VA who died ca 1719. There are not alot of cousins etc related to General George Thomas;
a lot of folks claim kinship, but it's not so.

Thanks! Sherry Falter

This is a good site for information of George H. Thomas. I came across it when I had to do a report on the battle of Chickamauga. Keep up the good work!

What a great website on a great American. It is so hard to find information on General Thomas. I have come to admire his genius and innovative style as a commanding officer. Thank you very much for the website and maintenance of the site, especially the bibliography.

Your site is one of the best historical sites I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. It is truly worthy of an award. You have carefully documented your sources and provided an intriguing site. I am a history student as Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and I can say your site has changed my opinion of internet sites as scholarly sources.

Thank you

My ggrandfather served under Thomas with the Army of Ohio and then the 14th Corp. of the Army of the Cumberland. He served in the 10th IN Inf. I think Thomas is the unsung hero of the Civil War. Had Grant and Sherman liked him, history would have him right next to them.

General George Thomas was my great Uncle. He is the brother of my great grandmother whose maiden name was Mary Lelia Thomas. She married Robert McGrady Pittman.

My great-great grandfather served under General George Henry Thomas at Stones River, Chickamauga and Chattanooga . He was with the 19th Illinois Inf. He was proud to be one of "Thomas' boys" and stood with him at Snodgrass Hill and went up Missionary Ridge. My mother who is a student of the Civil War considers him one of the greatest generals of that conflict. He needs more recognition. We appreciate this website.

Thank you for this site!

I first heard about General Thomas in 1958; my eighth-grade teacher, Sister Petronilla, O.S.B., (St. Bridget School, Minneapolis, MN) told a few of us kids after our graduation that her name was Agnes Thomas before she became a nun, that she was from Virginia, and that she was related to the General (but I don't remember what the relationship was). She did mention that Gen. Thomas was considered the black sheep of the family because though a Virginian he fought for the Union. Sister was elderly in 1958, and a fine teacher.

If you have any clues to how Sister Petronilla was related to General Thomas, I would very much like to know.

Thanks again!

Hello Dave,
Does anybody know where a photograph of...MRS....George Henry Thomas can be found? Certainly not in any of the photograph sections of any of the GHT books that I have.
Thanks.
